In my case removing the server from our standard Policy and then setting the mailbox retention to Zero days (our policy is 30)cleaned it up. Resolved by: (ADUC) re-Enable AD account > Create Mailbox (target original server/store). Then Delete Mailbox > Disable account. (ESM) Run Cleanup Agent > Purge mailbox.
