Windows for Workgroups 3.11 had its issues. Windows "Major Error" (Millennium Edition / Me) was a royal pain. But Windows Vista takes Microsoft's blunders to a whole new low. Run, run far away.

The halfway decent ones were Windows 3.1, Windows 95b/c (OSR 2.x), Windows 98SE, Windows 2K Pro, & Windows XP Pro. I never had much experience with Windows NT 4.5, so I can't say one way or the other.

I've downloaded the RC for Windows 7, but I don't have a machine to test it on as yet. I'll have to pull one out of service to "play" with. Sorry readers, as of 5 days ago (2009.08.20), MS was supposed to have pulled the plug on W7RC downloads.

From the reviews I've read thus far, W7 is supposed to be what Vista was intended to be (but Vista was rushed out the door prematurely).

I don't use Vista and don't recommend it to anyone. However, my largest client is running Windows Server 2008 Small Business Server in his office, which shares some features and/or components with the dreaded Vista. Well, let me get back to troubleshooting a problem with that SBS08 box. It seems to be related to a recent update too.

I hope you will enjoy Windows 7 more. :)

High CPU usage by svchost is often caused by a problem with automatic update of Windows or by malware.

I've upgraded to Windows 7 now :-)

On Vista the offending process was usually svchost.exe, which does not really give the game away.

Memory is supposed to be used and is used to make the computer faster. Why have unused memory?

I have a similar computer and the CPU is only used a few percent usually. What process is using the CPU a lot according to the Processes tab?
